5 Ways to Make Your Pores Smaller

Posted by Unknown

We all have pores, but how much time you spend "poring" over them probably depends on their size. With constant exposure to pictures of airbrushed celebs, its hard not to get a little obsessive over pore size and there are certainly plenty of products out there promising to minimize or reduce large pores. Let's take a closer look at how these products work and what you can do to help get control of your pores.

Can you shrink pores?
No, you can't shrink them, open them or close them. When it comes to pore-control products you'll see that they claim to reduce the appearance of large pores (not actually make pores smaller). That may sound like a subtle distinction but it's really not. There's not much you can do to physically make your pores smaller, but you can avoid making them look larger.

What makes pores look large?
  • Dirt - Pores get clogged with skin debris, makeup and dirt from the environment.
  • Oil - Excessive oil can keep pores filled with a layer of oil that accentuates their appearance.
  • Bacterial Growth - Contributes to blackhead growth, which makes pores look big.
  • Sun Exposure - Can thicken the skin cells around the edge of pores, making them appear larger.
  • Genetics - Determines your skin type and if you`re born with oily, thicker skin your pores will probably be more noticeable.

What can you do to make pores appear smaller?

  1. Wash Your Face - Removes pore-clogging dirt.
  2. Exfoliate - Try pore-minimizing scrubs or cleansers. They usually contain salicylic acid and/or beads to better break up excess oil, dirt and bacteria that can clog pores.
  3. Use Pore Strips - Pore strips can remove pore clogging dirt Just be careful to use as directed and only once or twice a week. Excessive use of pore strips can be irritating.
  4. Minimize Sun Exposure - Sun can exaggerate pores, so be sure to wear sunscreen if you are going to be outside.
  5. Absorb Oil - Try oil-absorbing makeup and/or blotting sheets to keep excess oil under control.

There is not much you can do about the size of your pores but there are steps you can take to keep pores from looking plump. A good skin care regimen involving cleansing and exfoliating, along with sun protection, can keep skin looking its best.

Household Stuffs You Can Use As Natural Beauty Fixes

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, January 25, 2012

It's no secret that beauty comes from within. But from within the refrigerator? You bet! Wipe out undereye circles, dry patches and other skin ailments with these inexpensive kitchen-staple remedies.

Baking Soda to Exfoliate Your Face

Fancy facial scrubs are a fun indulgence from time to time, but a much cheaper option that's just as effective: baking soda. The tiny granules of sodium bicarbonate buff away pore-clogging dead skin cells and are gentle enough for all skin types. Plus, like many other natural salts, baking soda also has slightly antiseptic properties that will ward off breakouts.
Make a thin paste with 4 tsp baking soda and 1 Tbsp water, let it sit for 2 minutes, then apply it in small, circular motions to your moistened face (avoiding the eye area) and neck. After 3 minutes, rinse clean with warm water and then follow up with a splash of cold water to close your pores. Finish with a dollop of your regular daily moisturizer. Dry or sensitive skin types should only use this mask every other week. Those with normal to oily skin can repeat the process weekly.

Lemons to Remove Dry Patches

When life gives you lemons, turn them into a remedy for rough, scaly skin. The citric acid removes dead skin cells to expose softer skin below. Slice a lemon in half and rub the cut side over your elbows, heels or knees for a few seconds, then rinse. You'll notice a difference immediately.

Coffee to Make Cellulite Fade Fast

Don't throw out those coffee grounds you used to brew your morning cup-apply them directly to your thighs! An exfoliating scrub made from the grounds will make your skin smoother and target cellulite. Just as coffee acts as a mild diuretic when we drink it, the caffeine-rich grounds will draw water out of your fat cells, shrinking them so they're less noticeable. Once or twice a week, when you're in the shower, try this scrub:

Dimple-Fighting Scrub
  • 2 Tbsp used coffee grounds (not decaffeinated)
  • 4 tsp olive oil

Combine to make a paste, then spread generously, in upward strokes, over any cellulite-prone areas. Massage in for 2 minutes, then rinse. Note: Your skin will have a slight brownish tint while using this scrub but it will wash away. Also, you (and the shower floor) will be slightly slippery.

Mint to Shrink a Pimple

This herb can tackle blemishes without drying skin like harsh acne meds. Peppermint contains menthol and menthone, compounds that reduce redness and inflammation. Mint also acts as an astringent, clearing away pimple-causing oil.
Pulsing a small handful of leaves in a food processor with 1 tsp lemon juice. (The acidic juice temporarily changes the pH of your skin, preventing bacteria growth.) Cover the blemish for 15 minutes, then rinse. Repeat twice a day until the spot is gone.

Ginger Ale to Cure Yellowed Nails

Drinking soda may not be good for you, but  soaking your nails in it is. Most mass-produced ginger ales contain soluble salts-like monopotassium phosphate, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate-that act as preservatives or emulsifiers. These will also naturally bleach your nails. Fill a small bowl with ginger ale and submerge your nails for 10 minutes twice a week.

Parsley to Brighten Dark Circles

Want to banish undereye circles in the blink of an eye? Pass the parsley. It's rich in vitamin K, a nutrient that, when applied topically, reduces blood flow to the eye area-a key factor in the formation of circles. Over time, the fatty layer of skin under your eyes thins out, which, in turn, makes underlying blood vessels more visible. Their slightly bluish color is what creates the illusion of circles underneath the eyes." To fight back, try this recipe once a week:

Brightening Eye Mask
  • 1 small handful of fresh parsley
  • 2 Tbsp plain yogurt

Place parsley and yogurt (which has a cooling and hydrating effect on skin) into a food processor. Pulse until a smooth paste is formed. Apply the mixture generously to your undereye area. Let sit for 20 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.

10 Must-Have Pants for Women

Posted by Unknown

Even if you're not a self-proclaimed "pants" girl, having these 10 essential styles in your wardrobe will ensure that when you do skip the skirt, you'll be comfortable and look fabulous.

Dark Jeans

Dark jeans with a uniform wash are a no-brainer because you can wear them for day or evening and they go with everything in your closet. Instead of buying 50 random pairs, search for one that fits you in all the right places and buy a couple of those guys. Not the most exciting shopping trip, but trust us, you'll be glad you did.

Nice Leggings

There are the leggings you wear when you get home from work, and then there are the leggings you can actually wear in public. If you're averse to being seen in such a body-conscious look, opt for legging jeans, which have a bit more structure. Pair them with tall boots and a knee-grazing coat and you'll be comfy without showing off every inch of your shape.

Cocktail-Party Pants

Silk or crepe de chine pants that are cocktail-party-appropriate will also serve you well on evenings when it's too cold to wear a skirt, when you're in conservative company or when you just feel like mixing it up a bit. Feel free to play around with a silhouette to suit your dressy-top lineup and high-heel options.

Office-Appropriate Trousers

Never underestimate the power of slim ankle-length pants and a pair of classic pumps. If you work in a traditional office, this is an especially important combo to have on hand. A neutral color and a not-too-tight fit are what keep this must-have looking professional and sophisticated.

Pants in a Bold or Bright Color

Choose the silhouette and material that suit your personal style and a color that complements your skin tone, and break these babies out when you really want to make a fashion statement. Wear them boldly with a loud top but remember: a white button-down and a pair of black pumps are just fine too.

Rugged Pants (Fit for a Lady)

Having a pair of cords, khakis or cargos in your wardrobe will prove useful when you want to go for more of a rustic vibe with your look. But that doesn't mean you can wear them only in the wilderness. Sometimes they're great for making sleek city blazers, boots and shades look a little more down-to-earth.

Boyfriend Jeans

Do we have to convince you that having a pair of loose, comfortable jeans in your wardrobe is a good idea? Two words for those gals still looking for this must-have: vintage Levi's.

Printed or Patterned Pants

Why should your blouses and dresses have all the fun? Keep a pair of printed or patterned pants on hand to experiment with pattern mixing and give your solid-color tops a bit of instant jazzing up. We love luxe menswear-inspired pairs but more feminine options, like florals and jacquards, also work.

Wide-Leg Pants

We don’t all have long stems, but those perfectly fitted wide-leg jeans certainly don't hurt if you're looking for a leg-lengthening style. Whether you opt for jeans or trousers is up to you; just make sure they fit like a glove up top and pool over your shoes down below. Break 'em out when you need to feel just a little bit more like a supermodel. Trust us, it works.

Persona-Altering Pants

Every gal needs to make room in her wardrobe for fun, I-don't-know-why-I-love-them-I-just-do pieces. Leather skinnies, sequined leggings and lace pants fall squarely into this category. It's OK to experiment with silhouette and fabric—just make sure your persona-altering pants get at least one thumbs-up from a nearby girlfriend or guy. You know, just to be sure.

What Your Physical Apperance Tells About Your Health

Posted by Unknown on Monday, January 23, 2012

Good health often is reflected in an attractive, youthful appearance. So you might be tempted to blame aging and stress for facial lines, unsightly fingernails, or hair loss when, in fact, these flaws can signal underlying health issues.

Here are 13 physical signs that trouble may be lurking beneath the skin's surface.

Wrinkles
Although wrinkles are inevitable, they also may be a sign of osteoporosis. Is your furrowed brow and grooved mouth ratting out your bones? Surprising new research reveals an association between wrinkles and bone health in early-menopausal women.

The worse the wrinkling, the greater the risk of lower bone density. Most wrinkles are the result of aging, but excessive exposure to cigarette smoke or the sun can speed the process.

Pitted Nails
Nails that are pitted, deformed, or discolored (yellow-brown), or nails that thicken or separate from the nail bed, can point to many health problems.

Nail changes are common in people with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition; psoriatic arthritis, a related joint condition; and alopecia areata, a type of patchy hair loss.

Pitting has been reported in patients with Reiter’s syndrome, a type of arthritis, and incontinentia pigmenti, a genetic skin condition.

Hair Loss
Pregnancy, stress, disease, medications, and changes in hormones all can contribute to hair loss.

Among women in particular, dry, thinning hair may be a sign of an underactive or overactive thyroid. A simple blood test can check whether the body is making normal amounts of thyroid hormone.

Yellow Eyes
Eyes are the windows intoi your health; so when your eyes —specifically the whites of your eyes—turn yellow, there's reason to suspect trouble.

In adults, it can be a sign of liver disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. It can also mean that the ducts that ferry bile away from the liver are blocked. Anyone with yellowing of the eyes should see their physician for further evaluation.

Body Hair
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common cause of increased hair growth in women of childbearing age, can cause infertility and infrequent, irregular, or absent periods. More than 70% of women with PCOS have hirsutism, or excess hair growth, typically appearing on the face, chest, stomach, back, hands, or feet.

Swollen Feet
Many conditions, including sprains, strains, injuries, and infections, can cause feet and ankles to balloon. Pregnancy, obesity, and certain medications may cause fluid retention in the lower extremities.

If you're one of the 5 million Americans with heart failure, you may be retaining fluid because of your heart’s poor pumping action. Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet is a classic symptom of this condition.

Large Hands and Feet
All are classic signs of acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that occurs in adults when the pituitary gland makes too much growth hormone.

It is such a rare disorder—and because changes in bone and soft tissue occur slowly over time—it doesn't dawn on people and often goes undetected.

A Foul Mouth
Bad teeth and gums aren't just signs of poor oral hygiene. Your mouth could be saying nasty things about your heart and bones.

In 2010, Scottish researchers reporting in the British Medical Journal found that tooth brushing lowers the risk of heart disease. Compared with twice-a-day brushers, people who brushed less frequently had a 70% greater risk of heart disease or death from heart disease. Tooth loss also can signal osteoporosis. Missing teeth may mean jawbone density can no longer support a mouthful of pearly whites.

Facial Flush
You might look red in the face, but it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Facial redness with acne-like skin sores are common symptoms of rosacea, a chronic skin condition.

Although the exact cause is not known, people with rosacea appear red and flushed in the face due to blood-vessel enlargement. Over time, bumps and pimples may form and the nose may grow bulbous.

Cracked Lips
Your lips can say a lot about your health. Severely cracked, dry lips may be a reaction to medication, an occupational hazard (if you're a brass musician), or a symptom of allergy, infection, or other conditions. Cracking at the corners of the mouth may be a symptom of Sjögren’s (pronounced SHOW-grens) syndrome, an immune system disorder. Sjögren’s causes dry eyes and dry mouth, as well as joint pain and dry skin.

Dark skin patches
A ring of dark skin at the back of the neck may look like it's crying out for a good scrubbing. But in reality, it may be acanthosis nigricans, a condition in which the skin appears darker and thicker—even velvety—along body creases.

People with insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity or, in rare cases, cancer, can develop these dark patches. Although not a definitive sign of diabetes, it makes you think twice and do more workup.

Butterfly Rash
A rash is like a red flag. It's your body's way of saying that something is not right.
There are all kinds of rashes, of course, but one in particular stands out. It stretches across both cheeks in the shape of a butterfly and has a sunburn-like appearance. This rash is a classic symptom of lupus, an immune-system disorder that affects the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys.

Moles
Sometimes a mole is just a harmless growth. Other moles signal the presence of skin cancer. Which ones mean trouble?

Look for growths that are asymmetrical, have an irregular border, vary in color, have a diameter larger than 6 millimeters (one-quarter inch), or are changing or evolving. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, may exhibit one or more of these features. People should tell their doctor if they notice any changes on their skin.
